In 2002, when my family helped move my grandmother out of the house she had lived in for 40 years, I found an old trunk. That old trunk started a challenging yet rewarding odyssey for me. In it were pictures of grandparents and great-grandparents I had never met, records of immigration, and much more that got me interested in exploring where my family came from and what their stories were.
Fifteen years later I’ve found my Irish, German, Slovakian, Swedish, and Scottish ancestors, and know many of the towns in the old countries where they came from. But more importantly, I’ve gotten to learn many stories of strength, faith, and hope throughout the generations that have undoubtedly been ingrafted into the family I know today. I have learned more about myself, and more about the world.
Over the course of the research process, from days in the records archives to quiet afternoons at rural cemeteries, I realized I really enjoyed what I was doing. In sharing results and stories with friends and family, I also realized that most everyone I talked to resonated with the desire to know more about who they are and where they come from. Thus was born the idea of Foley Genealogy Research – a client-first small business that helps connect people to the stories and personalities that will grow an understanding of place, self and history.
